Whitbread Girls Gathering – Britain, 1960s Photographer: Michael Joseph Medium: Original vintage darkroom photograph Campaign: Whitbread Pale Ale Title: Whitbread Girls Gathering Mount size 50cm high by 40cm wide Signed and titled by Michael Joseph A room overflowing with women, cards, flowers, food - and, most importantly, Whitbread Pale Ale. This wonderfully exuberant advertising photograph is classic Michael Joseph: a carefully constructed group scene that initially appears delightfully chaotic, but reveals more and more the longer you look. Women crowd around the table drinking, chatting and playing cards; others occupy every corner of the room, while bottles and generously filled glasses of Whitbread dominate the foreground. Almost every face seems to be involved in a different little story. It is this controlled chaos that Michael handled so brilliantly. Rather than simply photographing the product, he created an entire world around it - humorous, theatrical, sociable and unmistakably British. The period clothes, hairstyles, patterned tablecloth, overflowing flowers and wonderfully old-fashioned interior make the photograph a fabulous visual time capsule, while the prominent Whitbread bottles root it firmly in the golden age of British advertising photography. This is an authentic vintage darkroom photograph from Michael Joseph’s archive, personally signed and titled by the photographer on the original mount. A gloriously busy, beautifully orchestrated gathering - the more you look, the more you discover. Please note that an AI-generated simulation showing the photograph framed and displayed on a wall has been included purely to illustrate how the work might look in an interior setting. Scale and proportions are approximate and the simulation is intended as a visual guide only. The photograph is sold unframed.
