Piatto piano - Ceramica

A green-glazed ceramic dish modelled in the form of a lotus (lily pad) leaf, part of the long-established tradition of Chinese "nature form" wares in which tableware and display pieces are cast and glazed to mimic organic forms — leaves, fruit, and aquatic subjects among the most enduring. The rim is naturalistically scalloped and undulating, and the surface is incised with veining radiating from a central node in imitation of a true lotus leaf's structure. A small applied frog sits at the centre, modelled in the round and glazed in a slightly darker tone, with white-highlighted eyes and feet picked out against the body colour — a well-observed touch that lifts the piece beyond a purely functional dish into the realm of decorative whimsy, in keeping with the Chinese ceramic tradition of populating "leaf" and "lotus pond" forms with frogs, insects, or small aquatic creatures. The reverse continues the leaf illusion, with the vein pattern repeated in low relief across the underside. Two collection labels remain to the base ("K.7" and a numbered paper label), indicating the piece has passed through at least one earlier private collection — always a welcome thread of provenance, even where the collection itself cannot now be identified. On the glaze and condition: the piece shows two distinct tones of green glaze, with a lighter, mottled green breaking through in places against the deeper ground colour — a variation consistent with the firing process on wares of this type, and one many collectors will recognise and value as part of reading a piece's age and manufacture, rather than a flaw to be minimised. The frog has damage to the nose, noted for transparency and visible in the photographs. No reign or factory mark is present, so a late Qing to Republic period attribution is offered on stylistic grounds; earlier or later manufacture cannot be entirely excluded in the absence of a mark. A characterful piece for a collector building a group of Chinese nature-form or lotus-themed wares, or as a satisfying stand-alone display object. Dimensions: 14cm diameter x 2cm high Weight: 178g Condition: Sold as shown — two-tone/mottled green glaze as described, damage to the frog's nose
