Ruth Bernhard (1905–2006) was a German-born American photographer and one of the most important twentieth-century masters of the photographic nude. Born in Berlin and based in the United States from 1927, Bernhard began her career in New York before a decisive meeting with Edward Weston in 1935 profoundly shaped her approach to photography and led her toward the precise, modernist vision for which she became celebrated. Working primarily in black and white, she transformed the female body, shells, found objects, and still lifes into highly controlled studies of light, form, texture, and abstraction. Her nude photographs—including such iconic images as In the Box—are distinguished by sculptural lighting, extraordinary tonal richness, and compositions in which the body becomes both intensely human and almost architectural. Bernhard moved within the wider circle of major American modernist photographers that included Ansel Adams, Imogen Cunningham, Wynn Bullock, Edward Weston, and Alfred Stieglitz, while developing a visual language unmistakably her own. Her work occupies an important place in the history of fine-art photography, modernist photography, and the female nude, and vintage silver gelatin prints by Bernhard are represented in major museum and photographic collections worldwide.
