Title: Japanese Kakejiku (掛軸), Hand-painted Kabuto Painting by Gohō (伍峰) Artist: Gohō (伍峰) Overall scroll size: Approx. H 190 × W 54.5 cm (H 74.8 × W 21.5 in) Painting area size: Approx. H 108 × W 40 cm (H 42.5 × W 15.7 in) Material: Hand-painted colour on silk, silk brocade mounting, resin roller knobs Tomobako (共箱) size: H 7.7 × W 63 × D 8 cm (H 3.0 × W 24.8 × D 3.1 in) Period: Late Showa era (c.1970–1980) This auspicious kakejiku (掛軸) was created by Japanese artist Gohō (伍峰) in the late Showa period. The subject is a samurai kabuto (兜,helmet), a traditional Japanese auspicious motif for blessings and protection against misfortune. It is finely hand-painted with colour and gold pigment. The kabuto (兜) carries a powerful presence with tall, slender front ornaments. The fukikaeshi (吹返,helmet side flaps), cheek guards and crimson cords are carefully depicted. The colour palette is elegant and stately, with strong decorative appeal. Signed Gohō (伍峰) on the left of the painting, with a clear red artist’s seal. Woven silk brocade mounting with refined patterns, fitted with resin roller ends. Supplied with paulownia Tomobako. Due to age, the mounting is intact with no tears. Faint foxing spots appear lightly across the silk painting. The silk painting is intact, without cracks or repairs. The paulownia Tomobako shows signs of ageing and surface grime. Overall condition is good for its age.
