Martin Kippenberger was born in postwar Germany and died in Vienna when he was only 44 years old. He was a prolific artist and refused to limit himself to any particular medium. Kippenberger was considered an “enfant terrible”, a rebel, who rejected the expectations of the art market. While visiting New York in the early 1990s, he began making latex and rubber paintings. This monumental canvas is covered with a layer of latex, which forms a meaty, grimy, cracked surface with protruding rubber objects, suggesting fetishism, bodies and sex. Kippenberger had a peculiar sense of humour, with a sharp tone of social criticism. He questioned the potential for artistic authenticity and originality and claimed that he was working in the face of the death of painting.
