Icona - Madre di Dio di Kazan - Legno
This is a 19th-century Russian Orthodox icon of the Mother of God of Kazan, one of the most beloved and widely venerated Marian icons in Russia. Depicted here is the Theotokos in a gentle half-length pose, her head inclined lovingly toward the Christ Child, who raises His right hand in blessing while holding a scroll in His left. This composition reflects divine wisdom, blessing, and maternal compassion. The faces are rendered with great sensitivity, left uncovered by the ornate gilt oklad (riza), which is finely embossed with floral and geometric patterns in traditional Imperial Russian style.
The Kazanskaya icon has its origins in a miraculous 16th-century apparition in Kazan and quickly became a national protector and spiritual emblem, often invoked in times of war and hardship. By the 19th century, icons of this type were commonly produced and cherished in both public worship and private devotion, representing divine intercession and grace.
This example is encased in a period wooden frame with intricate gilded detailing and protected under glass, preserving its beauty while enhancing its reverence. A treasured devotional object, this icon offers both spiritual depth and a tangible connection to the long tradition of Russian Orthodoxy.
Condition
Overall good antique condition. The gilt oklad shows light wear with some loss in the lower corners. Painted features remain clear and expressive. The wooden frame is structurally sound with minor surface wear. The backing is aged but intact. The protective glass is undamaged and clear.
Professionally packed and shipped with upmost care. This increases the shipping cost slightly but it reassures that it arrives without damages.
