A Yoruba head, Nigeria, collected at Ikeja.

Yoruba wooden heads are typically sculpted in hardwood and often display a high level of craftsmanship. They are usually life-size or slightly larger and exhibit an idealized naturalism, characterized by a calm expression, symmetrical facial features, and stylized elements. The head (orí) is proportionally larger than in actual human anatomy—a deliberate artistic choice intended to emphasize its spiritual importance. As William Fagg observes, “In Yoruba art, the head is disproportionately large, stressing the belief that it is the seat of destiny and personal identity” (Fagg, 1963, Yoruba Sculpture, p. 14).

Notable features include almond-shaped eyes, a narrow nose, and delicately carved lips, often closed in a serene expression. In some cases, the head is adorned with vertical striations (called ila) that represent facial scarification, marking lineage, status, or regional origin. Elaborate headdresses or crowns may also appear on heads that represent deities (òrìṣà) or royalty, indicating their sacred or political authority.

In Yoruba cosmology, the head is not merely a physical part of the body—it is deeply symbolic. The orí is considered the locus of a person’s spiritual essence and destiny (orí inú), a belief that aligns with the Yoruba notion that individuals choose their destinies in the spiritual realm before birth. As Henry Drewal and John Pemberton note, “The orí is regarded as the most important part of the body because it houses the inner head, the essence of a person’s being and the bearer of his or her fate” (Drewal & Pemberton, 1989, Yoruba: Nine Centuries of African Art and Thought, p. 25).

In ancestral altars (called ile orí or ibori), sculpted heads may represent deceased elders and are used as a means of veneration and spiritual communication. The wooden head serves as a tangible medium through which the living maintain relationships with their ancestors, acknowledging their guidance and authority.

Wooden Yoruba heads serve multiple roles across different contexts—ritual, commemorative, and political. In royal contexts, such as those of the Ọba (king), wooden heads may be incorporated into larger ensembles, including thrones, staffs, or ceremonial masks. These heads affirm the divine authority of the king, who is regarded as a living representative of ancestral and spiritual forces. Their use in palace rituals reinforces continuity, legitimacy, and divine favor.
