A gorgeous tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) painted with a lush flower garden alive with Japanese tit 四十雀 (shijûkara) , set against a goldish-silver leaf ground with an attractive aged patina. The composition unfolds mainly along the lower register of the panels, creating the impression of a vast radiant sky and evoking a sense of tranquil openness. Blooming in soft clusters are vivid seasonal flowers: soft pink hibiscus 芙蓉 (fuyô), pampas grasses 薄 (susuki), white and pink lespedeza 萩 (hagi), blue asters 野菊 (nogiku), narcissus 水仙 (suisen) and other blossoms. The painting is bordered by two brocade silk trims: a slender ecru inner band and a broad greenish-blue outer band, and encased in a brown lacquered wooden frame with metal fittings. Signed and sealed in the lower right corner: “Drawn by Kinrô” 金陵寫. Although the signature and seal were those used by the artist Kaneko Kinryô, this screen is not by his hand but rather an homage to his name.
