Moholy-Nagy and The New Vision
Moholy-Nagy László
Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography/1990/japanese/215*298*10
Catalog published for the exhibition “Moholy-Nagy and The New Vision,” the second exhibition organized by the Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography. László Moholy-Nagy, invited to the Bauhaus by Walter Gropius in 1919, implemented a multifaceted foundational education utilizing photography and design, exerting a profound influence on Bauhaus pedagogy. After the Nazi regime, he fled to America in the 1930s and established the New Bauhaus (later The Institute of Design and the Illinois Institute of Technology) in Chicago, then considered a barren land for art where commercial ethics took precedence. He became active again in the 1950s after the war. In Japan, it is also known as the university where Yasuhiro Ishimoto, who introduced the new concept of “design” to Japanese photography—then primarily documentary—studied diligently. This book introduces 94 works from the “German New Photography” movement, centered on Moholy-Nagy.
