Bastone da passeggio - .925 argento - Victorian circa 1900

Antique Walking Cane with Yellow Galalith Handle and Silver Collar – ca. 1900 An elegant antique gentleman’s walking cane, dating from around 1900, beautifully combining early modern materials with refined craftsmanship. The cane features a striking yellow L-shaped handle, made of galalith (casein) – an early plastic developed in the late 19th century and widely used for luxury items such as walking canes, umbrella handles, and jewellery. The material was admired for its smooth surface, ivory-like sheen, and ability to take rich colours like this vibrant yellow. Below the handle sits a decoratively engraved silver collar, finely detailed with scrolling foliate motifs in the late Victorian style. The collar connects to a dark wooden shaft (likely ebony), polished to a soft lustre and ending with a simple ferrule. During the late Victorian and Edwardian periods, walking canes were indispensable accessories for well-dressed gentlemen – symbols of refinement, status, and personal taste. This example reflects the transitional style of that time, merging traditional craftsmanship with modern materials like galalith. A refined and collectible piece that perfectly captures the elegance of the turn of the 20th century. Good antique condition – light age-related wear; overall solid and well-preserved.
