Antique Walking Cane – Bamboo Shaft with Dual Hallmarked Sterling Silver Mounts (J.H., London 1929)
A refined gentleman’s walking cane, made in London in 1929 and fitted with two elegant sterling silver mounts by the silversmith J.H.. The cane features a classic crook handle formed from richly patinated bamboo, complemented by engraved silver collars – one at the handle and one at the upper shaft – each bearing clear London hallmarks for 1929. The bamboo shaft has a warm golden-brown tone with fine linear grain and visible natural nodes, typical of Malacca cane, long prized for its combination of strength and lightness. The silverwork displays elegant scroll and leaf engraving, characteristic of late Art Deco refinement, merging traditional craftsmanship with modern restraint.
This walking cane embodies the elegance and understated luxury of interwar English style – a sophisticated accessory for the discerning gentleman. By the late 1920s, bamboo and Malacca canes remained symbols of taste and social standing, though their ornamentation had shifted toward the cleaner, geometric aesthetic of the Art Deco era.
