Jim Goldberg (USA, 1953) - Rich and Poor - 2014

Jim Goldberg (USA, 1953) “Rich and Poor” book, 2014 Language: English New revised edition published in 2013 24.71 x 2.64 x 32.28 cm - Hardcover - 256 pages From 1977 to 1985, Goldberg photographed the wealthy and destitute of San Francisco, creating a visual document that has since become a landmark work. Through the combination of handwritten comments by the photographed people about their lives and of their photographs, Rich and Poor's mass appeal was instantly recognizable. In 1984 the series was exhibited alongside Robert Adams and Joel Sternfeld in the "Three Americans" exhibition at MoMA, and was published the following year by Random House. Out of print since 1985, Jim Goldberg's Rich and Poor has been completely re-designed and expanded by the artist for Steidl. Available for the first time in hardcover, Rich and Poor builds upon the classic combination of photographs and handwriting and adds a surplus of vintage material and contemporary photographs that have never been published or exhibited. The photographs in Rich and Poor constitute a shocking and gripping portrait of America during the 70's and 80's that remains just as relevant today. Although the book received one mixed review shortly after publication, other reviews were positive, and it was later selected as one of the greatest photobooks of the 20th century. Condition: barely perfect, one corner of the hard cover seems to be slightly bumped Publisher: Steidl Year of the Print: 2014 Provenance: Private Collector Biography: Jim Goldberg (born 1953) is an American artist and photographer whose work reflects long-term in-depth collaborations with neglected ignored or otherwise outside-the-mainstream populations. Goldberg has received three National Endowment of the Arts Fellowships in Photography a Guggenheim Fellowship the Henri Cartier-Bresson Award and the Deutsche Börse Photography Prize. His works have been exhibited published and collected internationally. Goldberg is Professor Emeritus at the California College of the Arts and has been a member of the Magnum Photos agency since 2002. He lives and works in the greater San Francisco Bay Area.
