Juan García Ripollés

Juan García Ripollés (1932) born in Alzira, Valencia, commonly known as Ripollés, is a Spanish artist celebrated for his resilience and innovation. Overcoming a difficult childhood, he pursued his artistic ambitions in Paris in 1954, where his career gained early recognition, notably exhibiting at Galerie Drouant David alongside works of artists like Picasso and Chagall. Upon his return to Spain in the 1960s, Ripollés established his creative base in nature, often painting outdoors at his home in Mas de Flors, Castellón.

His work is characterized by a unique combination of naïve art influences, vibrant colors, and symbolic expression. His oeuvre includes painting, sculpture, and engraving, with a strong emphasis on themes of vitality, transformation, and universal emotions. His visual language often blends childlike shapes with deeply expressive forms, creating a distinct style that celebrates both simplicity and emotional depth. Known for his sculptures, Ripollés also incorporates rich Mediterranean symbolism, drawing inspiration from themes of life, nature, and personal freedom.

Juan Ripollés has exhibited his work internationally, showcasing his paintings, sculptures, and engravings in numerous prestigious venues. In 2019, he presented works at the Art Center Museum in Taiwan and participated in the Urban Art Fair in Paris. In 2018, he unveiled a large sculpture in Ede, Holland, and exhibited across Taiwan, Paris, and Brussels. Throughout 2017, Ripollés held a retrospective in Taiwan and exhibited in several cities, including Paris, Taipei, and Rotterdam. His 2016 highlights included a retrospective in Taiwan and exhibitions in Chicago and Switzerland. From 2015 to 2014, Ripollés continued to showcase his works across Europe and Asia, including designing the scenography for The Magic Flute in Castellón, Spain. In 2013, his exhibitions spanned China, Belgium, and Spain. Notably, his 2012 retrospective in Valencia, Spain, highlighted his diverse artistic journey. In 2011, Ripollés took part in the Venice Biennale and exhibited at the SOFA Art Fair in Chicago. In the late 2000s, his large sculptures were featured in cities like Seville, Madrid, and Brussels. He also exhibited at the World Economic Forum in Davos in 2008, further solidifying his international reputation.
