Beschrijving van de verkoper

Extremely Rare Late Medieval Pewter Flagon – First Quarter 15th Century

A very rare and early pewter flagon, probably Dutch, dating to the first quarter of the 15th century.
The vessel presents a bulbous body rising to a slender, slightly flaring neck.
The scrolling handle features a moulded rosette at the lower attachment and zig-zag engraved motifs.
Originally fitted with a hinged lid, now missing – consistent with age and use.

A similar jug with the same characteristic handle design was dredged from the river Merwede and is dated c. 1400.
Literature: W. Drexler, Das Hausgerät Mitteleuropas, Braunschweig/Berlin 1973, p. 180.
These exceptionally early examples seldom survive, especially with such a pure, unaltered medieval form.

Provenance:
Property of an important Belgian private collection.
Ex Christie’s Amsterdam – Furniture and Works of Art, 15–16 December 2008, Lot 19.

Condition:
Good condition for age. Wear, scratches, pitting and oxidation consistent with 600+ years of age. Lid missing.
Please refer to the photos for a full condition assessment.
Dimensions: approx. 19,2 cm tall
Material: Pewter
Date: c. 1400–1425
Origin: Probably The Netherlands

A rare opportunity to acquire an authentic medieval pewter flagon — museum-worthy and highly collectible.

Will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking.

Please note that we currently do not ship orders to the United States.
