A parcel-gilt and polychrome carved walnut figure of Saint Andrew
Spain — Late 16th / Early 17th century
A very rare and expressive sculpture of St Andrew, shown standing in a graceful contrapposto pose, holding the X-shaped cross (saltire) as his attribute, and a book in his left hand. Beautiful traces of the original gilding and polychromy still visible throughout the figure.
Carved in walnut, with typical Spanish late Renaissance / early Baroque stylistic features: deeply carved drapery, finely detailed beard and hair, and striking presence.
