Shinkichi TAJIRI (Los Angeles 1923 - Baarlo 2009) Tajiri studied in Paris and at the Art Institute of Chicago. He has taught at the Werkkunstschule in Wuppertal and at the Academy of Berlin. Tajiri lived and worked in Baarlo (Limburg) and Berlin (Germany). Shinkichi Tajiri was born in Los Angeles to Japanese parents. Tajiri got his inspiration from his environment, cubism, technology and his Japanese background. Shinkichi Tajiri was one of the few sculptors from the Cobra group. Tajiri's warriors are a constant in his work, his first warrior dates from 1948 and he continues to make them, in paper, stone, iron, etc. They radiate aggression, which is a recurring theme in his work. Tajiri's work is also described as erotic, in the sixties he designs large female/male symbols. In 1967 Tajiri starts with the knots, he chooses this basic shape because it is used by so many people worldwide. These statues can be found throughout the Netherlands, including in Maastricht and The Hague. Exhibitions and prizes: Tajiri's work is included in various private collections and museums worldwide. He represented the Netherlands at a number of international exhibitions, including the Venice Biennale and the Documenta in Kassel.
