Born in 1958 in Zell am Harmersbach, Ruff is one of the so-called “Becher School” photographers, having studied under Bernd and Hilla Becher alongside Andreas Gursky, a leading figure in contemporary photography. Since the 2000s, he has also served as a professor at his alma mater, the Düsseldorf Art Academy. Beginning with his “Interieurs” series—accumulated since his academy days, capturing typical German domestic interiors—he gained attention with his “Portraits,” large-scale enlargements of portraits featuring friends from his personal circle. Since then, he has continued exploring new concepts of “photography” through landscapes, architecture, nudes, celestial bodies, and even computer-generated digital images and works reconstructing materials circulating on the internet. This book is a catalog collection published on the occasion of Rüff's major retrospective exhibition, which toured from the National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo to the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa in 2016.
