This Woman’s Work: Anthology 1978–1990 is an eight-disc box set by Kate Bush, released in October 1990 as a career-spanning retrospective of her first twelve years as a recording artist. The set gathered together all of her studio albums from her 1978 debut The Kick Inside through to The Sensual World (1989), and added two extra discs of B-sides, rarities, and non-album tracks. At the time, it was the most comprehensive collection of her music ever released, presented in a beautifully designed black box with a booklet containing photographs, lyrics, and credits.
The set’s title was taken from Bush’s 1988 song “This Woman’s Work,” originally written for the John Hughes film She’s Having a Baby. The song, with its themes of vulnerability, compassion, and the emotional labour of women, gave the anthology a deeper resonance. It was not simply a compilation but a reflection on the personal and creative effort behind her music. The phrase also carried a sense of artistic self-awareness, acknowledging Bush’s career as a woman who had insisted on full creative control—writing, producing, and arranging her own work long before that was common among female artists in pop music.
The box set includes The Kick Inside (1978), Lionheart (1978), Never for Ever (1980), The Dreaming (1982), Hounds of Love (1985), and The Sensual World (1989), followed by two discs titled This Woman’s Work Volume One and This Woman’s Work Volume Two. These final two discs collected a wide range of B-sides and rarities that had been scattered across singles and film soundtracks. For many fans, these discs were the main attraction, offering long-sought-after songs such as “Under the Ivy,” “December Will Be Magic Again,” “Be Kind to My Mistakes,” and “The Empty Bullring.” It is worth to note that the two rarities discs were never released separately from the original This Woman’s Work: Anthology 1978–1990 box set. They are exclusive to that 1990 release and have not been issued as standalone albums
In interviews around the time of its release, Kate Bush spoke about the collection with a sense of closure and reflection. In one interview with Q magazine, she described it as “rounding up” her earlier work: “In some ways this boxed set has almost put an end to an era. It feels like a rounding up, a putting to bed — putting all those little sheep in a pen.” Her words capture her characteristic mixture of humour, humility, and poetic sensibility. The set represented a pause in her career, a moment of stillness between the intense experimentation of the 1980s and the new phase that would begin with The Red Shoes a few years later.
She also referred to the box as a “breathing space and a turning point,” suggesting that it allowed her to look back on her early achievements with affection while making room for future creative growth. By collecting her past work so carefully, she was, in a sense, freeing herself to move forward.
