A hand-knotted Afghan or Baluch saddlebag (torba/chuval). The style, motifs and colors of the piece shown in the picture are typical of the nomadic tribes living in the northeastern parts of Central Asia and Persia. Type and Origin: Probably Afghan or Baloch tribal weaving, may date from the second half of the 20th century. Motifs: The central part depicts a stylized building or mosque, surrounded by human figures or stylized figures, which is common in figurative or pictorial rugs. The borders feature repeating geometric or stylized human/animal shapes. Material and Technique: Hand-knotted wool, the weft threads may be cotton or wool. The colors are deep, rich shades, mainly in shades of red, burgundy, dark blue and beige, which may indicate natural dyes. Function: Based on its size (68X55 cm wide), it can be the front part of a half saddlebag (bagface), or a very small, portable prayer rug.
