Max Pollak (1886-1970). "Maria Ley" [famous Austrian dancer]. Etching and drypoint on Zanders laid paper (watermark). Published in 1924. Signed in pencil by the artist. Size: 40 x 29 cm. Max Pollak, Czech painter and refined printmaker, a distinguished disciple of the great William Unger, was highly recognized in Austria and the United States, where he emigrated in the 1920s. He specialized in portraiture, and he produced a series of drypoints of notable figures and dancers. He was a member of the Chicago Society of Etchers and the California Society of Etchers, and his work is represented in the Oakland Museum of California Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New York Public Library, the Smithsonian American Art Museum, the de Young Memorial Museum, the Achenbach Foundation for Graphic Arts, the British Museum, the Judah L. Magnes Museum, and Princeton University. A beautiful portrait of the famous Austrian dancer (Maria Ley) reminiscent of the graceful figures of Ernst Oppler. Minimal handling marks.
