The figure is seated in quiet contemplation upon a lotus base, finished in black lacquer with areas painted in lacquer mixed with gold powder. The serene face, with inlaid crystal eyes, gives the figure a lifelike presence. The attributes include the wish-fulfilling jewel, the lotus bud, and a rosary, all of which symbolise enlightenment and spiritual purity. The Dharma wheel, once held in one hand, is missing and replaced with a disc to indicate its former placement. The top left hand has a broken stub remaining in the palm, showing where the original attribute was once attached. The figure wears a metal crown adorned with floral and flame motifs, now showing corrosion and warping due to age. A copper mirror is embedded in the halo and finely carved on the reverse with cranes and a turtle among pine and bamboo, traditional symbols of longevity and good fortune. The mirror bears the signature “Fujiwara Yoshikatsu (藤原義勝).” The Fujiwara family were renowned mirror craftsmen during the Edo period, with several generations serving the imperial court. On the underside of the lotus pedestal, an inscription reads “Nyoirin Son newly carved, consecrated on the 15th of October, Kyōhō 6 (1721),” confirming its age. The entire piece consists of four detachable sections: the main figure, the lotus base, the pedestal, and the halo. The sculpture exhibits significant age-related wear and soiling throughout. The lacquered surface shows extensive cracks, flaking, and discolouration. The left arm has been reattached and shows visible adhesive residue and misalignment. A repair is visible on the upper left of the head. The arm resting against the right cheek is removable. The lotus base has numerous wormholes, missing portions, and traces of old repaint. The halo shows large structural cracks, lifting areas of lacquer, overpaint, and repair marks around the mirror setting. The metal crown and ornaments are deformed and partially missing. The copper mirror surface displays oxidation and rust. The wooden pedestal shows cracks, insect damage, and chipped edges. Please refer to the photographs for detailed condition.
