Rare 1941 Herend “Rothschild Bird” Cake / Sandwich Set
An exceptional World War II–era Herend porcelain set, beautifully preserved through one of the most turbulent periods of the 20th century.
This elegant 1941 Rothschild Bird dessert set consists of a long rectangular serving tray with two handles and six dessert or cake plates. The set was originally produced in 1941, as confirmed by the factory marks. The tray and four of the plates are original 1941 pieces, while two plates were carefully replaced in the 1960s, restoring the set to full functionality and visual harmony.
The iconic Rothschild Bird pattern was first created around 1850 for the European Rothschild family and is widely regarded as the very embodiment of hand-painted porcelain artistry. The composition features twelve different bird motifs, accompanied by delicately painted butterflies and insects in soft pastel tones.
The design illustrates a charming 19th-century legend of Baroness Rothschild, who once lost her necklace in the garden of her Vienna residence. One evening, she discovered it again — hanging among the branches, playfully carried by two colorful birds. This romantic story lives on in one of Herend’s most celebrated and poetic patterns.
