A marine ivory okimono depicting Hotei standing, holding a large sack in his left hand and a fan in his right, with a smiling karako (child) at his feet.
Signed under the base.
Hotei (布袋), one of the Seven Gods of Fortune (Shichifukujin 七福神), is regarded as the god of happiness, abundance, and good fortune.
The karako motif is very common in Japanese art and symbolizes joy, prosperity, and good fortune; these child figures embody innocence and hope for the future.
---The okimono is in good condition. Natural ivory cracks and hairlines consistent with marine ivory. Please refer to the pictures for further details.
Okimono (置物), combining the kanji "oki" (置き, to place) and "mono" (物, object), refers to a decorative object meant for display. Okimono, popular in the Meiji period (1868 - 1912), were finely crafted sculptures made from materials such as ivory, boxwood, wood, and bronze.
