The design flows seamlessly across all four tiers and the lid, creating an elegant panoramic scene. The box is designed so that when divided into two tiers with one of the additional lids, the bamboo design continues harmoniously. Small fragments of gold foil are scattered among the leaves, adding a subtle shimmer. Maki-e is a traditional Japanese decorative technique where gold or silver powder is sprinkled onto wet lacquer to produce intricate designs. The interior of the box is finished in vermilion lacquer, contrasting vividly with the black and gold exterior. Bamboo holds a rich symbolic meaning in Japanese culture, representing strength, resilience, and upright character. Its ability to bend without breaking has long been associated with endurance and flexibility, while its evergreen nature conveys longevity and prosperity. There are signs of age including wear, small scratches, chips, flaking and discolouration of the lacquer. Both lids show some warping. Please refer to the photos for details of the condition.
