Byôbu 屏风 (biombo ou painel dobrável) - Seda dourada, Madeira lacada, Seda, Papel, Madeira lacada - Japão - Período Meiji Inicial (segunda metade do século XIX)
A gorgeous tall six-panel byôbu 屏風 (folding screen) featuring a refined painting on shiny gold leaf portraying a lush flower garden in the height of late summer. This screen includes a rare and special feature: a second painting on the reverse.
The composition unfolds predominantly along the lower section of the panels, creating the illusion of a wide, radiant sky and evoking a sense of tranquil openness. Blooming in gentle clusters are vivid seasonal flowers, including bright pink-white peonies 牡丹 (botan), fiery red cock’s comb 鶏頭 (keitô), soft pink lilies 百合 (yuri), yellow hibiscus 芙蓉 (fuyô), delicate fringed pinks 撫子 (nadeshiko), deep blue morning glories 朝顔 (asagao), and other smaller ground blossoms.
The reverse is also painted, in elegant black ink sumi-e 墨絵 style, with young pine tree saplings 松 (matsu).
Framed by a pair of brocade silk borders, one narrow and ecru-coloured, the other wide and black. And encased in a black lacquered wooden frame with decorative gilt metal fittings.
Period: Japan – Early Meiji period (Second half 19th century)
Dimensions: Total width 376.4 cm (2 x 64.2 cm, 4 x 62 cm); Height 176.5 cm
In a very good condition considering its age, with some expected signs of wear conform age on both sides and restorations, including touch-ups to the gold leaf and repapering on the reverse. Please refer to the photos for a detailed condition reference.
The folding screen is ideal for mounting flat on a wall and presenting as a single work of art.
When shipped we will add a certificate of authenticity.
