This Yakusha-e (役者絵) ukiyo-e work was created by Utagawa Kunisada III (also known as the first Utagawa Kunisada), a representative artist of Yakusha-e (役者絵) in the late Edo period of Japan, during the Tenpō to Kaei era (1830–1850s, the mid-19th century), and published and distributed by the hanmoto (publisher) Kyokutei Zushiki (曲亭図色).
The composition focuses on the stage image of the kabuki actor Shōmei no Kiroku (鍾銘の紀六). It uses exaggerated muscular physique to enhance the character's sense of power, and the sharp expression matches the emotional tension of the theatrical performance. The dark background texture paired with light green patterns creates the typical "night stage" atmosphere in Yakusha-e (役者絵).
With a history of more than 170 years, this woodblock print has signs of aging due to the passage of time, including oxidized yellowing, mold spots, insect damage, wrinkles and edge wear on the paper.
