Lunar meteorites are among the most fascinating objects in the universe. These rare rocks, ejected from the Moon’s surface by powerful asteroid impacts, offer us a direct connection to our nearest celestial neighbor. When an asteroid or comet crashes into the Moon, the impact can propel chunks of lunar rock into space. Because the Moon lacks a thick atmosphere, these rocks escape more easily than they would from Earth.
After wandering through space for thousands or even millions of years, some of these fragments are captured by Earth’s gravity and fall to its surface as meteorites. Unlike Apollo samples, lunar meteorites are found here on Earth—primarily in deserts and icy regions like Antarctica, where dark rocks stand out against light-colored landscapes. They are incredibly rare, making up only about 0.2% of all meteorites discovered.
Lunar meteorites are more than just rocks; they are natural emissaries from beyond our planet that represent the violent processes shaping celestial bodies and the interconnectedness of the Earth-Moon system. Owning one is literally holding a piece of another world in your hands.
Adrar 013 is a meteorite found in the Sahara Desert in 2023. It is classified as a Lunar meteorite (melt breccia).
