Figurine - Mwana Hiti - Kwere - Tanzânia
(Kwere) Mwana Hiti Figurine.
Tanzania.
The Mwana Hiti figurines are most commonly linked to tribes in the central and northern coastal regions of Tanzania, such as the Kwere people amongst others. In its literal translation 'mwana hiti' means 'child made out of wood'. Such dolls are used as symbols of fertility and coming of age of young women in their respective society. Often Mwana Hiti representations are incorporated in other ethnographic objects of use, representing the important role of the woman in such matriarchal societies. This specific doll contains the typical abstracted cylindrical form of the body with a representation of breasts and navel. The size of the object is slightly larger than most common dolls, although not atypical.
