The surface has a rich, tactile character, giving the impression of shifting natural forces and a cosmic, atmospheric space. Sakata Jinnai (b.1943) is a distinguished contemporary Japanese artist. After studying under Kamoda Shoji in 1964, he established his kiln in Mashiko in 1966 and gained renown for his innovative black pottery. Since 1971, he has held numerous solo exhibitions in Japan and abroad, including at Takashimaya, Seibu, Green Gallery, New York (1994), Shanghai (2009), and the Xi’an World Horticultural Expo (2011). His artistic scope later expanded into washi paper (1995), glass (2000), LED lighting (2003), hyper-powered drawing (2006), and bonsai pots (2007). In 2013–2014, he dedicated works to Izumo Taisha, Ise Jingu, and Atsuta Jingu. His creations frequently explore cosmic and natural motifs, and are featured in publications such as MOKU and Harmony.
