The 2006 Gillardi Langhe Rosso “Merlò” (Langhe DOC) is a traditional red wine from the Azienda Agricola Gillardi in the rolling hills of Langa, Piedmont, Italy. Produced only in the best years, Il Merlò is crafted primarily from Merlot — sometimes blended with Cabernet and other classic Bordeaux-influenced varieties — reflecting an Italian interpretation of international grapes within a Langhe terroir. This wine typically offers a deep ruby-to-garnet color with age, and on the nose it shows ripe red and dark fruit aromas like cherry and plum, accompanied by earthy, spice and tertiary notes developed over time. On the palate it’s medium- to-full bodied, with velvety tannins, integrated oak complexity from extended aging in small barrels (often around 18–24 months), and a lingering finish that highlights intertwined fruit and savory tones. A wine of both structure and drinkability, the 2006 vintage would now be showing mature characteristics, making it suitable with rich pasta dishes, roasted red meats, or aged cheeses.
