She was considered a symbol of strength – her name comes from the Greek verb “μέδω” “to guard or protect”. Her image was used frequently as a symbol of protection on military paraphernalia, such as shields and breastplates. According to myth, Medusa was once a beautiful maiden who was transformed into a monster by Athena as punishment for being violated by Poseidon. Medusa's gaze turned people to stone, making her a feared and tragic figure. In modern interpretations, Medusa has evolved into a symbol of empowerment, representing the complexities of victimhood, strength, and transformation. SELEUCID KINGDOM The Seleucid Kingdom was founded by Seleucus I Nicator, one of the generals and successor of Alexander the Great. At its height it stretched from Greece to India, blending Greek and Eastern cultures. The Seleucids issued some of the largest and most artistic silver coins of the ancient world, often featuring gods like Apollo or portraits of their kings. Their capital, Antioch, became a thriving center of trade, culture, and early science. SELEUCUS I NICATOR (358-281 BC) was one of the generals of Alexander the Great, and later founder of the Seleucid Empire. After Alexander’s death, he carved out his realm during the Wars of the Diadochi and established Antioch and Seleucia-on-the-Tigris as major cities. Nicknamed Nicator (the Victorious), he was known for both his military skill and for blending Greek and Eastern cultures within his Empire. He was eventually assassinated in 281 BC, but his dynasty ruled for over two centuries. SARDES, once the capital of the Lydian Kingdom, became an important city under the Seleucids. Located on key trade routes in Asia Minor, it was famous for its wealth, textile production, and temples, especially the sanctuary of Artemis. During this period, Sardes blended Greek and Anatolian traditions, serving as both a military stronghold and a cultural hub of the Hellenistic world.
