About the Artist: Jitendra Kumar Sharma
Once again the urban desire becomes a point of departure for the artist Jitender Kumar Sharma. Born and brought up in Benares, the holy city of the Hindus in India, Jitender grew up with the sights and sounds of the city.
And what shaped his aesthetics was the well built and rounded bodies of the wrestlers who belonged to various akharas (schools of wrestling). Later on Jitender's attention went to the Bahurupiyas (people who deck themselves up as mythological characters) and he started combining the images of the strong bodied wrestlers and the Bahurupiyas.
In the given context of the residency, Jitender articulates his idea about the city like Delhi through a series of Bahurupiyas who wears branded footwear. He imitates the famous brands and the logos in their shoes and says that even within the tradition of wrestling and Bahurupiyas, the desire for modernization is palpable in their liking for branded or brand-like wears.
The critical aspect in Jitender's works is subtle but powerful as he combines the inherent religious ideas of an Indian and its political causes and effects with the ideas of consuming. Through his skillfully painted images, litender suggests that even the religious discourse which is meant for spiritual sublimation too has become an effective vehicle for the proliferation of the corporate culture.
Jitendra Kumar Sharma has participated in several exhibitions across India and continues his art practice out to Benares his hometown in Delhi.
