Egito Antigo Colar de Amarna com amuletos de Bes dançando e tocando pandeiro e cabeça de Hathor. - 28 cm

Rare and beautiful necklace from the Amarna Period (1353-1336 BC), remarkable example of Egyptian jewellery, crafted from faience, a glazed ceramic material widely used in Ancient Egypt for the creation of amulets and decorative objects. Its delicate and symbolically powerful design links it to the religious and protective beliefs of the time. The necklace is composed of a series of tubular and circular faience beads in bluish tones, interspersed with small amulets with anthropomorphic and zoomorphic figures. Among them are representations of the God Bes, a popular deity in Egyptian religion, known for his protective role, especially in the domestic sphere, childbirth, and childhood. Bes, often depicted playing musical instruments such as the tambourine, was a guardian against evil forces and a symbol of joy and protection. In the center of the necklace is a larger amulet, likely depicting the head of the goddess Hathor, a deity associated with love, music, motherhood, and protection. Hathor was one of Egypt's most venerated goddesses, and her iconography, featuring cow ears or a stylised female face, was common in jewellery and ritual objects. The choice of earthenware for this necklace is not accidental. This material, characterised by its blue-green hue, was symbolically associated with rebirth, fertility, and divine protection. The blue hue evoked the Nile, the sky, and regeneration—fundamental elements of the Egyptian worldview. During the Amarna Period, under the reign of Akhenaton, artistic production underwent a significant stylistic shift, with more naturalistic representations and a preference for themes linked to the sun and everyday life. Although the iconography of Bes and Hathor does not entirely fit with the religious reform promoted by Akhenaton, their presence on this necklace suggests that popular beliefs and protective traditions continued to play an important role in Egyptian society. Similar necklaces have been found in tombs and archaeological contexts from different periods of Ancient Egypt, reinforcing their function not only as adornment but also as an object of protection in life and the afterlife. The excellent preservation of this piece allows us to appreciate the skill of Egyptian artisans in the manufacture of ritual and personal jewellery, as well as the durability of earthenware over time. With modern clasp as show the picture. Acquired from a Spanish private collection, F.C.B in the 70's. -The piece includes an authenticity certificate.
