This is a Japanese antique bamboo flower basket (hanakago), a beautifully crafted piece used traditionally in ikebana (Japanese flower arranging) and tea ceremony settings. The basket features a distinctive silhouette with a wide, flared mouth that tapers inward at the waist before gently bowing back out toward the base — an elegant hourglass-like form rarely seen in everyday basketry. The body is woven in a bold, open-weave diagonal pattern using thin, flat strips of smoked bamboo (susudake) in a rich, deep mahogany-brown tone that speaks to considerable age and careful handling. Four vertical bamboo ribs reinforce the sides, lending structural integrity while enhancing the sculptural quality of the form. The base is supported by four solid, rough-hewn natural bamboo root feet, each irregular in shape — a hallmark of rustic Japanese craft aesthetics that celebrates the beauty of unmodified natural material.
