Children of a school playing in front of the Tables of the Law, a kite rising in the sky to celebrate the Republic Day, a chopped tree trunk felled during the Israeli-Arab war of 1967, the tomb of David, the Wailing Wall, the cenacle where Christ and the apostles celebrated Easter, the crypt of the Holy Sepulchre, the threshold of the mosque towards which the faithful direct themselves to celebrate Friday prayer, such are some of the images from Giovanni Chiaramonte’s pilgrimage to Jerusalem.
Giovanni Chiaramonte (1948 - 2023) was born in Varese, Northern Italy, to Sicilian parents, and began photographing in the late 1960s. Deeply influenced by the theological and aesthetic tradition of the Eastern Church, he shared with the Russian filmmaker Andrei Tarkovsky the theme of the relationship between place and destiny in Western civilization. In 1978 he founded with Luigi Ghirri the publishing cooperative “Punto e Virgola” and later directed the Jaca Book collection. In 1984 he participated with other photographers in the project Viaggio in Italia (Voyage en Italie) conceived by Luigi Ghirri and two years later in the collective work “Esplorazioni sulla via Emilia”. Many exhibitions of his works have been organized in various countries and he published numerous photography books. In December 2023 a memorial meeting was organized at MUFOCO, Museo di Fotografia Contemporanea (Museum of Contemporary Photography) in Cinisello Balsamo near Milan. A gallery in Bergamo presented in 2022 a very large exhibition of his works under the title
