Vintage or anirique Chinese camphor wood box with deeply hand carved decoration. Single front brass latch, brass hinges. The top and front of the box are more decorative than the back and sides. 4 basic feet pinned to base. Beautiful deep colour throughout.
Estimated to date from the 20th century, presumably the 2nd half. A beautiful looking piece which would look good on top of any cabinet, desk or drawers. The box measures 30 x 19 x 17cm high. Some scribblings are visible at the bottom. The box has some minor cosmetic blemishes, but nothing that affects its structural integrity. Pictures are part of the description.
Camphor wood was traditionally used to make chests and boxes because the wood is naturally dense, highly fragrant, and repels moths and other pests. This made it the perfect material for protecting valuables and personal effects.
