Nanbantekiseibutsu 南蛮的静物(なんばんてきせいぶつ) | Kawakami Sumio 川上澄生(かわかみすみお)
This artwork is one of the pieces from "Nanbancho 10-dai" produced in 1969. It is a still life painting arranging daily items with a "Nanban-teki" (exotic/Western style) taste. A lamp, a mug, and a pipe, which Sumio Kawakami loved throughout his life, are arranged on the screen. The lamp is the motif that appears most frequently in his works as a symbol of civilization, enlightenment, and exoticism. These are expressed as a space drifting with a somewhat warm exoticism (Nanban taste) through Kawakami's unique simple yet refined carving and deep, nostalgic colors (multicolor printing).
