This extraordinary gold-splashed Artist's Proof is one of the rarest and most experimental darkroom prints to emerge from Michael Joseph's archive. Originally created as a test shot during a studio session, the image has been transformed through Joseph's own darkroom intervention into something that sits somewhere between photography and painting.
A solitary female figure stands in quiet profile, her body reduced to an almost ethereal silhouette. Around her, an extraordinary veil of shimmering gold appears to drift across the surface like celestial dust, metallic mist or scattered starlight. The effect is simultaneously delicate and dramatic, dissolving the boundaries between reality and abstraction.
The result immediately recalls the pioneering experiments of Man Ray, whose celebrated solarisations transformed conventional photographs into dreamlike visions. Yet this is no imitation.
