Background Information:
This cast bronze fibula dates to the 1st–2nd century AD and is formed in the shape of a swastika, an ancient solar and protective symbol that was widely used throughout the Roman world long before its modern appropriation. In antiquity, the swastika symbolised good fortune, prosperity, eternity, and the cyclical movement of the sun, appearing on jewellery, mosaics, military equipment, pottery, and personal ornaments.

The brooch is decorated with concentric ring-and-dot motifs, a characteristic decorative technique frequently employed on Roman bronze dress accessories. Originally fitted with a pin mechanism on the reverse, it served both as a functional garment fastener and as a decorative personal ornament.

Swastika-shaped fibulae are a recognised but comparatively uncommon type within Roman provincial archaeology. They are particularly associated with the northwestern provinces of the Empire, including Germania Inferior and Britannia, where local artistic traditions blended with Roman metalworking techniques. Their distinctive form suggests that, beyond their practical purpose, they may also have been worn as protective or auspicious symbols.

Produced in specialised bronze workshops using mould-casting techniques, such brooches were distributed through military and civilian communities alike. They formed part of everyday dress for both men and women, securing cloaks and outer garments while simultaneously expressing personal identity and cultural symbolism.

Today, Roman swastika fibulae are appreciated for their unusual form and historical significance, representing an ancient symbol whose original meaning was entirely positive and associated with protection and good fortune. This example provides a direct and tangible connection to the Roman world, where symbolic objects of this kind accompanied their owners in daily life nearly two millennia ago.
