Beautiful leaf with two hand-colored woodcuts, heightened with egg-white of sea-monster like ray and another large Ray fish from Conrad Gesner's "Fischbuch".
A remarkable Renaissance zoological woodcut with an almost sea-monster appearance. The fantastic creature, with its long serpentine tail, reptilian-looking head and wing-like fins, belongs to the early modern representation of rays and related marine animals.
The other woodcut shows another large Ray fish.

Conrad Gesner is considered the father of modern scientific bibliography, zoology and botany.
He was a Renaissance polymath, physician, philosopher, bibliographer, philologist, natural historian, and illustrator who spent most of his time collecting, researching, and writing. He compiled monumental works on bibliography (Bibliotheca universalis 1545–1549) and zoology (Historia Animalium 1551–1558). This woodcut was published in the 2nd volume of the "Historia Animalium" dedicated to fish and sea animals.
