A. Ortelius, 'Cypri Insulae Nova Descript 1573'

Antwerp, 1579

'Cypri Insulae Nova Descript. 1573' a beautifully coloured map of Cyprus by Abraham Ortelius, engraved by Johan van Doetichum and published in Antwerp in 1579. This example comes from the first Latin edition in which the map appeared.

The island is depicted in remarkable detail, with towns, mountains, rivers and coastal features clearly marked. An attractive inset in the lower corner presents the Greek island of Lemnos. The composition is completed by an elegant strapwork title cartouche and a sailing ship in the Mediterranean.

Abraham Ortelius (1527–1598) was one of the most influential cartographers of the 16th century. His celebrated Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, first published in Antwerp in 1570, is generally regarded as the world’s first modern atlas. Its maps are admired for combining geographical scholarship with exceptional decorative artistry.

A highly desirable early map of Cyprus by one of the great figures in the history of cartography.

Dimensions: 35 x 49.5 cm (engraving); 41.5 x 56 cm (total)

Good condition. The original hand-colour has later been touched up and is finely heightened with gold.
