Irohanioedo 色は匂へど(いろはにおへど)|Iwata Sentaro 岩田専太郎(いわたせんたろう)
This is a woodblock print artwork titled "Irohanioedo" by Sentaro Iwata, a Japanese painter and illustrator representing the Showa period. It is included in the Bijinga series "Sanbyaku-nen no Onna" published by a major newspaper publisher. It is a multi-color hand-printed woodblock print made by craftsmen, using the traditional technique called "Kirazuri" which reflects a unique luster on the background. This artwork was created in 1973, the year before the author passed away, and is a masterpiece of his final years.
Artist Profile:
1901: Born in Tokyo.
1914: Moved to Kyoto after graduating from elementary school. Studied Japanese painting and design under Keigetsu Kikuchi and others.
1920: Worked on illustrations for newspapers and historical novels, becoming a popular painter.
1961: Awarded the Medal with Purple Ribbon.
1974: Deceased.
