Rare 18th-Century David Weege Lottery and Card Game
Offered for auction is a rare and fascinating 18th-century David Weege “Vermaaklyk Loterye en Kaarte Spel” (Entertaining Lottery and Card Game), an unusual combination of a lottery game and playing-card game produced in Amsterdam.
The lot contains:
45 of 60 illustrated lottery cards
60 of 60 corresponding text cards
28 lottery class/prize cards, relating to First, Second and Third Class
20 blank cards
A set of old standard playing cards
David Weege’s lottery game is particularly interesting because the illustrated cards were designed to function both as lottery cards and, in many cases, as playing cards. Historical examples of the game are known with 60 illustrated cards, corresponding text cards and additional lottery tickets relating to prizes and non-winning outcomes.
The present lot is therefore an unusual and substantial group of original material connected with this fascinating 18th-century Dutch lottery and card game.
Please note that the illustrated lottery cards are incomplete (45/60), while the text-card set is complete (60/60).
There are also 28 additional class/prize-related lottery cards, as well as 20 blank cards.
A remarkable collector's lot for enthusiasts of 18th-century Dutch games, lottery history, playing cards, engraved cards and historical ephemera.
Condition and Storage
The cards are currently kept in an old stamp-collecting album, which is included solely as a protective storage folder to keep the historical cards together and in a clean, orderly condition.
The stamp album is not the original book, case, or packaging belonging to the David Weege game. It is simply being used for practical and protective purposes.
The album itself is in rather worn and damaged condition, consistent with its age and previous use. The condition of the album should therefore not be confused with the condition or historical significance of the cards themselves.
