Coin Description
This is a British India Victoria One Rupee Silver Coin (issued by the East India Company, first released in 1840, commonly known as the "Young Victoria Rupee").
Obverse (the side shown in the picture)
1. Portrait: Left-facing bust of the young Queen Victoria. This is the classic early "Young Victoria" portrait, with curly hair tied back and a headband.
2. Circumscribed inscriptions:
* Left: VICTORIA
* Right: QUEEN Meaning: Victoria, Queen.
3. Coin border: Beaded circle (a ring of small beads), a characteristic feature of this variety.
Basic Background
* Issuer: British East India Company. It was legal tender silver currency for the Indian colony. It weighs approximately 11.66 grams with a silver fineness of about 91.7%.
* Reverse (not shown in this photo): Normally displays the British St George shield, surrounded by the text EAST INDIA COMPANY, together with the mint year.
* Variety: The 1840 issue is the Divided Legend type. VICTORIA and QUEEN are placed separately on either side of the portrait, and this is the most common variant.
Collecting Notes
* Huge quantities of these coins circulated at the time. Many entered old China and were widely used in coastal trade during the modern era.
* Your coin bears noticeable circulation scratches on its surface. It is a circulated specimen without original mint luster, which lowers its market value.
