Copy and slipcase in near fine condition.

Gestein (Rocks) is the final photobook by prominent German New Objectivity (Neue Sachlichkeit) photographer Albert Renger-Patzsch, published in 1966 just six months before his death.

Rocks, geological formations, and stone layers photographed across France, Norway, Northern Ireland, Italy, Sweden, and Germany. Features an essay by the philosopher and writer Ernst Jünger and textual input/captions by geologist and palaeontologist Max Richter. Designed and printed in Italy by master typographer Giovanni (Hans) Mardersteig.

Renger-Patzsch captured rock formations as silent evidence of deep geological time and history, reflecting nature's slower, monumental rhythms. The precision and sharp focus of his documentary style transform tectonic fractures and rock surfaces into striking images that balance realistic detail with abstract patterns. Renger-Patzsch considered the book a "completely new type of book" that encircled its subject from poetic, scientific, and optical perspectives by combining photography, philosophy, and rigorous science.

First edition, first printing. With original slipcase! Hardcover in grey linen with slipcase (as issued). 270 x 350 mm. 33 pages. 62 black and white photos by Albert Renger-Patzsch. Text: Max Richter, Ernst Jünger. Text in german. Condition: Book inside and outside excellent, flawless; like unread. Slipcase complete with no tears and no missing parts.
