Descrição fornecida pelo vendedor

Ngil decorative mask, originating from the Fang people of Gabon.

These masks were worn by members of a male judicial society of the same name (Ngil), which acted as a peacekeeping force and judicial authority. The wearers appeared at night by torchlight to purify villages, pursue wrongdoers and identify sorcerers.

The artistic style of the Fang profoundly influenced European modern art in the early 20th century, particularly artists such as Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso. The mask is distinguished by its elongated shape, simple lines forming heart-shaped concave areas around the eyes, and a long, stylised nose.

The pale, whitish surface results from the application of kaolin, a white mineral clay. This light colour carries strong spiritual symbolism, directly associated with the realm of the ancestors, purity and justice.
