WXYZ (1980) – “322-1”

Original bronze sculpture entirely produced under the artist’s direction and involvement throughout the different stages of the traditional bronze-making process.

WXYZ personally oversaw and participated in the successive stages of production, from the moulding of the original prototype and the creation of the wax model to the bronze casting, final chasing and patination of the piece. This hands-on approach allows the artist to remain closely involved in the transformation of his original sculpture into bronze.

For this version, WXYZ chose an antique green patina, evoking the natural oxidation of bronze over time. The rich green tones, subtle variations and textured surface give the sculpture an aged, almost archaeological appearance. This finish emphasizes the material's character while echoing the artist’s fascination with urban surfaces, traces of time and imperfections.

The 322-1, an emblematic figure in WXYZ’s work, emerged from his transition from graffiti to sculpture. It translates his graphic language into three dimensions while reflecting his interest in urban materials and their imperfections. Its name refers to Article 322-1 of the French Penal Code concerning damage to property, a direct nod to the artist’s roots in graffiti.
