In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Black Forest was renowned for woodcarving, clocks (cuckoo clocks) etc.
Around 1800–1850, woodcarvers from towns such as Furtwangen, Triberg, and Brienz (near the Swiss border) also began making nutcrackers, often as a sideline alongside clocks and furniture.
