Bactrian Bronze Kohl Vessel with Applicator
Circa 1st millennium BC
This interesting bronze kohl vessel has a bulbous body on three short conical feet, a moulded collar at the shoulder, and a tall neck finishing in a wide flared rim. Accompanying it is a bronze applicator: a long, slender rod topped with a small pierced finial.
Kohl, a cosmetic substance of powdered or paste-like form, dark in colour. Primarily composed of substances like lead sulfide or antimony, kohl has been used as eye makeup. Kohl has been utilized by individuals across different societies, serving both cosmetic and cultural purposes, such as reducing sun glare and protecting the eyes from infections.
