Seljuk Bronze Ewer with Lamp-Shaped Spout Circa 12th-13th century AD This is a beautiful cast bronze ewer featuring a pear-shaped body resting on a concave flaring foot. Atop the neck sits an oil lamp-shaped finial with a hinged lid and a prominent upward spout. The elegant handle, riveted to the corpus, and the spout includes a protruding finial that serves as a thumb rest. The Seljuks, a medieval Turkic dynasty, played a significant role in shaping the history of the Islamic world. Emerging in the 11th century AD, the Seljuks originated from the steppes of Central Asia. The dynasty began with Tughril Beg, establishing its dominion across a vast territory, including parts of Anatolia, the Middle East, and Central Asia. A similar example can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Accession Number: 33.96.
